Showers, showers, showers…what about May flowers? Around 25 inches of rain has fallen on the tri-state area so far this year. With so much rain in the forecast, it’s not easy to plan a spring-summer get-together.
Don’t let our lack of sunshine spoil your fun. Bring your outdoor party inside with these top party-saving tips.
Keep the outdoor theme
So you planned a pool party and suddenly, dark clouds appear. Don’t scrap the idea completely. If it’s a kids’ event, let them spread their towels on the living room floor and play games. Or, let them stay outside and play water gun tag or jump through sprinklers!
If you planned to entertain friends, serve the poolside summer cocktails and snacks indoors. Can you move your outdoor furniture and grill into the garage? Open the door, let the fresh air in and let the grilling begin.
If the rain progresses to a full-on thunderstorm with lightning, bring the party totally indoors for safety’s sake. Fire up the indoor grill and roast some veggies in the oven. For atmosphere, fill the living room with lots of foliage.
Play indoor games
If your outdoor party plans involve a cake and ice cream, a rain date may not go over well. Keep the kids engaged with an indoor scavenger hunt, a beanbag toss, balloon volleyball, or kid karaoke.
Kids like to eat anywhere but the kitchen table. Go with it: cover the coffee table in a disposable tablecloth and let them eat at the coffee table. A table with a raised top lets you bring the snacks closer to them and away from the floor.
If you have an entertainment or hobby room, if it’s age appropriate, let them have some time at the pool table or gaming center. It’ll be time to open presents before you know it.
Have extra seating on hand
You may have planned an outdoor gathering for a reason: space. It’s easier to host a large group in the back yard than in your family room. If you do get rained out, don’t leave your guests standing. Make sure you have enough seating for extra people.
Ottomans are versatile and don’t take up much space. Extra dining chairs can stack in the corner or in a closet when not in use. Barstools can provide extra party seating as well as seating for your breakfast bar or kitchen island.
Maybe you imagined a Saturday night under the stars, with cold drinks, fun music and better friends. And then the rain hit right as your first guests arrived. When all else fails, make it a movie night and pour some wine from your wine cabinet for the occasion.
A media room outfitted with a large TV, Blu-ray player, and other devices, all housed in an elegant media center, sets the stage for a rain day Plan B. Pop some popcorn and relax with your best buds and a good flick.
