Why Does My Pillow Keep Falling Off Of My Bed (6)

How many times have you been about to drift off into a nice refreshing sleep, only to be awakened by your pillow sliding from under your head into the abyss that is the gap between your mattress and your headboard?

If you are one of the people that has been tormented by the hunt for lost pillows, you might be wondering; What options are there for me? Are there ways to prevent my pillow from falling? What is the best way to make sure my pillow stays on my bed and away from the gap? How do I ward of those dreaded pillow gremlins?

At Furniture Fair, we sell both mattresses and beds, and we are all too familiar with “the gap” and the many lost pillows it has claimed. Thankfully we’ve used our 50 years of experience in the bedding industry to find solutions that you can use for defeating that pillow stealing gremlin.

This article will cover why the gap is there in the first place and then go over some ways that you can keep your pillow on your bed where you need it to be. Read on to ensure that your pillow remains on the right side of the bed.

Why Is There A Gap Between The Mattress & My Headboard In The First Place?

At first, the idea of a gap between a headboard and a mattress may seem like an unintentional design flaw. However, the actual reason for the gap is much more functional. The gap is actually there to help with applying and removing fitted sheets.

The gap gives you room to properly maneuver your hands when applying or changing your bed linens. Nobody wants the frustration of having to wiggle in tight spaces when changing sheets. Unfortunately, this advantage in ease-of-use can be a disadvantage when you sleep.

If you sleep with your head close to the headboard, your pillow might slide into the gap overnight, whether due to you moving around or due to gravity and the weight from your body. While this might seem like a minor annoyance, that minor pain can get real old, real fast.

If you want to fix the gap problem, here are a few ways that will help you.

Solution #1 Slide Your Mattress Closer To The Headboard

One of the biggest parts of your gap problem might be that your gap is bigger than it needs to be. If your mattress isn’t pushed as close to the headboard as possible, you might want to move it closer. Moving the mattress can help create a smaller gap with less pillow-eating capabilities.

If your mattress has a tendency to slide when you use it, remember to slide it back regularly to ensure that your pillow stays on your bed when you use it. Keep in mind that when you sleep, you may shift around, and that can make your mattress slide over time.

Solution #2 Change Your Pillowcase

This might seem like a bit of a stretch, but perhaps your current pillowcases are a bit to slick for your sheets. If your pillow is made from a particularly “slippery” fabric material, you might want to consider getting a less-slick fabric pillowcase.

Consider using cotton-based pillowcases with a high thread count in order to create a bit more surface texture and less smooth slippery fabric.

While this option may not be the best solution, if you want your pillow to slip around less, it’s a viable option to consider.

Solution #3 Get A Mattress Wedge Pillow

A mattress wedge pillow is similar to a cork in a bottle that when placed over the opening, keeps things from getting inside. Wedge pillows are usually angled wedge-shaped pillows that are designed to fit over the gap in your bed.

If you sleep close to the headboard, a wedge pillow might be a good option for you. The wedge pillow creates an even larger surface area and will keep your pillow out of that pesky crack between your headboard and your bed.

Mattress wedge pillows come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and can be found online at multiple retailers. Make sure that you purchase the right size for your bed.

Solution #4 Use An Adjustable Base With Headrest Support

This is the most expensive investment, but it will solve your lost pillow issues and do much more. An adjustable base is a power-operated motion bed base that lets you recline, sit up, or elevate your legs to a higher degree for better blood flow.

An adjustable base with a headrest will let you tilt the head of the mattress up ever so slightly, making it much harder for your pillow to slide down behind the head of the bed.

While it may seem like a major purchase for such a small issue, you will also benefit from the many other features.

Stop Losing Your Pillow To The Bed Gap!

If you’re fed up with the frustration of your pillow sliding behind your bed, now is the best time to do something about it.

Find out if your mattress needs to be slid closer to your headboard. Consider whether or not a new pillowcase might make your pillow less likely to slide off.

If you want to remove that bed gap, consider getting a wedge pillow or an adjustable power base with a headrest. Find out which option works for you and say goodbye to those annoying nights spent hunting for that lost pillow.

If you are in the market for an adjustable base, pillow, or mattress and live in the Cincinnati, Dayton, or Louisville area, consider shopping at Furniture Fair.
