Why Is There A Gap Between The Mattress & My Headboard In The First Place?

At first, the idea of a gap between a headboard and a mattress may seem like an unintentional design flaw. However, the actual reason for the gap is much more functional. The gap is actually there to help with applying and removing fitted sheets.

The gap gives you room to properly maneuver your hands when applying or changing your bed linens and other mattress accessories.

Nobody wants the frustration of having to wiggle in tight spaces when changing sheets. Unfortunately, this advantage in ease-of-use can be a disadvantage when you sleep.

If you sleep with your head close to the headboard, your pillow might slide into the gap overnight, whether due to you moving around or due to gravity and the weight from your body. While this might seem like a minor annoyance, that minor pain can get real old, real fast.

If you want to fix the gap problem, here are a few ways that will help you.

Solution #1 Slide Your Mattress Closer To The Headboard

One of the biggest parts of your gap problem might be that your gap is bigger than it needs to be. If your mattress isn’t pushed as close to the headboard as possible, you might want to move it closer. Moving the mattress can help create a smaller gap with less pillow-eating capabilities.

If your mattress has a tendency to slide when you use it, remember to slide it back regularly to ensure that your pillow stays on your bed when you use it. Keep in mind that when you sleep, you may shift into different sleeping positions, and that can make your mattress slide over time.

Solution #2 Change Your Pillowcase

This might seem like a bit of a stretch, but perhaps your current pillowcases are a bit to slick for your sheets. If your pillow is made from a particularly “slippery” fabric material, you might want to consider getting a less-slick fabric pillowcase.

Consider using cotton-based pillowcases with a high thread count in order to create a bit more surface texture and less smooth slippery fabric.

While this option may not be the best solution, if you want your pillow to slip around less, it’s a viable option to consider.

Solution #3 Get A Mattress Wedge Pillow

A mattress wedge pillow is similar to a cork in a bottle that when placed over the opening, keeps things from getting inside. Wedge pillows are usually angled wedge-shaped pillows that are designed to fit over the gap in your bed.

If you sleep close to the headboard, a wedge pillow might be a good option for you. The wedge pillow creates an even larger surface area and will keep your pillow out of that pesky crack between your headboard and your bed.

Mattress wedge pillows come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and can be found online at multiple retailers. Make sure that you purchase the right size for your bed.

Solution #4 Use An Adjustable Base With Headrest Support

This is the most expensive investment, but it will solve your lost pillow issues and do much more. An adjustable base is a power-operated motion bed base that lets you recline, sit up, or elevate your legs to a higher degree for better blood flow.

An adjustable base with a headrest will let you tilt the head of the mattress up ever so slightly, making it much harder for your pillow to slide down behind the head of the bed.

While it may seem like a major purchase for such a small issue, you will also benefit from the many other features.
