Summer is just around the corner which means longer days, warmer weather, and more time spent outdoors. Give your backyard a refresh and create a sanctuary within your home to enjoy all the benefits of summer while including elements that will work with cooler months as well. Here are recommendations, from the experts at the Furniture Fair, for transforming a backyard, patio, or terrace of any size into a sanctuary.
Add a water element to increase the tranquility of your space. It’ll help drown out noise coming in from the street or your neighbors’ homes. At the same time, a fountain or mini waterfall will help you find your zen.
Whether it’s a patch of grass where you can have your own backyard picnic, a hammock for afternoon naps, or a sofa, give yourself space to sit, relax, and enjoy.
Going vertical is especially valuable if you don’t have a large backyard. Including different dimensions will make it feel more spacious. Planted vertical strips or a small vertical garden is the way to go.
Light it Up
Brighten up your space in the evenings with a mixture of different lighting options. Play with elements such as string lights, Edison bulbs, or uplights to create an enchanting night experience. Space-permitting, fire pits add a nice touch and can be enjoyed on cooler evenings or for roasting marshmallows. If you’re low on space, a table top fire bowl can add a similar effect.
While being in the sun is lovely and vitamin D is crucial, it’s not always conducive to relaxing, working, or reading. Sun umbrellas offer the flexibility to create shade when needed or you can remove it when you’re craving some rays.
Last but not least, no sanctuary is ever complete without ample greenery. Having a variety of different flowers, plants, and trees will give your sanctuary vibrancy. Take it a step further and plant your own vegetable and fruit garden. Pro tip: lettuce, cucumbers, and carrots tend to be easier to plant.
