So if you're looking for American made, high quality, very customizable, and comfortable at that, then Smith Brothers would be the brand for you. Hi. I'm Clark Spalding and I'm the bow tie guy here at Furniture Fair. So throughout this video, we will discuss some of the unique features that they offer, who would be interested in purchasing a piece of Smith Brothers, Some of the customizability options with Smith Brothers. And, we'll also discuss what to do if you have any other questions or concerns. Smith Brothers' main focus is going to be mainly your living room or basement area. So they have stationary furniture. They have reclining furniture. When it comes to their reclining, they do have manual options as well as power options. So Smith Brothers is one of our best companies that we carry out of Indiana. They've been around for almost a hundred years now. And when we talk about their construction and the quality and the attention to detail that they put into their products, that definitely puts them up as one of the best, manufacturers that we carry. And when it comes to their seating and their suspension system, they're not gonna be using the regular sinuous springs that are in most, sofas. They're the ones that kinda sit in. They look like snakes. Smith Brothers is gonna be using an actual coil spring system. So underneath each individual seat is a set of coils. This also helps in the fact that each seat is individually suspended. So if someone sits on the end of the sofa and then someone sits on the middle seat right next to them, no one's falling in towards each other. Another great trait about Smith Brothers is how much they genuinely care about their product and how much they care about the consumer. They go to great lengths to make sure that if there's a problem with their furniture, they get it solved and that they prevent it from happening in the future. They really care about their product and the consumer. Smith Brothers falls into the best category because of the construction, the customizability, and the attention to detail that they put into their work is above almost everything on our floor. So Smith Brothers is gonna be for the kind of person that wants this to be the last sofa that they have to buy. They want something that's gonna hold up to either their kids or guests. Also for someone who is looking for something higher quality that they can customize so that they can get the nice fabric that they want or, the nice down pillows. Another thing that may attract people to Smith Brothers is the fact that it's made in America, right up the road in Indiana. The biggest drawback when it comes to Smith Brothers is probably going to be the price. It's not a price that everyone can afford. It's definitely gonna be, more of a top tier kind of, furniture. If you're going to be looking at a sofa that you wanna replace in five, six years. Also, if you're gonna have, you know, kids jumping on it, if you have little ones, if you have pets, that like to tear things up, then Smith Brothers may not be the best for you either. Smith Brothers in terms of their customizability, can go a lot of different ways. Some of their frames are what they are and you choose the frame and then you get to choose your pillow fabrics or your nail head or they have frames like their three thousand, five thousand, nine thousand, and eight thousand series where you can go as in-depth as choosing your arm style, choosing your leg style, choosing your back style, then choosing your fabrics, choosing your pillow fabrics. If your sofa has nail heads, you can typically choose between one of four nail head colors. And then they also have different leg color options to stain the legs since the legs are part of the solid wood frame. They have hundreds of different fabrics. And other than a select few, they're pretty much cool with putting any fabric on their sofa and chairs. Some are limited to pillows only, but only a few couple. So if you want a green floral sofa, you can have a green floral sofa. I believe they are the best value on our floor. They're in our best ranking system right along with Stickley, and they're very, very similar to Stickley, almost identically made, and they're about half to two thirds of the price. If you wanna learn more about Smith Brothers, I highly recommend coming into one of our stores and talking to one of our amazing sales reps. Watch: What You Need To Know About Smith Brothers (5:22)
Smith Brothers isn't inexpensive furniture, and it isn't trying to be. You're paying for heavier construction, American manufacturing, and the ability to choose exactly how your furniture looks instead of settling for a handful of stock fabrics. If you're looking for the cheapest sofa you can get into your living room, Smith Brothers probably isn't where we'd point you. If you're looking for something you can customize and keep for a long time, that's where the brand starts to make sense.
Every piece is built to order in Berne, Indiana, where Smith Brothers has been making furniture since 1926. You choose from over 1,000 upholstery options and more than 100 leather choices, and the factory builds your sofa, recliner, or sectional to your specifications.

100+ Leather Choices, Built to Order
Smith Brothers offers over 100 leather options, including aniline and semi-aniline top-grain leathers. That's a lot, but leather is simpler to narrow down than fabric because the range is mostly about color, texture, and finish. If you know whether you want something smooth or more textured, and a general color family, our team can pull the right samples pretty fast.
1,000+ Upholstery Fabric Options
Having a thousand fabrics sounds great until you're standing in front of a wall of a thousand fabrics. You don't need to look at every one. Start with how the furniture will be used, whether you have kids or pets, and a few colors you know will work in the room. From there, our team can narrow the wall down pretty quickly.

"The thing about Smith Brothers is, you're not picking something off a shelf. You're building it. Frame, fabric, leather, the whole thing is your call. Here's what I'd do: come in, sit on a few pieces, figure out what feels right, then we'll go through the samples and make it yours. The trick is making sure the frame and the cushions work for how you actually live, not just how it looks in a catalog."

What Makes Smith Brothers Furniture Different?
The meaningful distinction isn't handcrafted versus mass-produced. It's built-to-order versus stock furniture. Every Smith Brothers piece is assembled in their Berne, Indiana factory after you choose the frame, configuration, fabric or leather, and features. You're not picking from what a warehouse happens to have on a shelf. If you are new to custom upholstery, our guide on understanding furniture quality tiers explains what to look for in frame construction, cushion quality, and upholstery durability.
Craftsmanship and Construction
Smith Brothers uses American hardwood frames, reinforced joinery, and coil spring suspension systems rather than the sinuous wire springs you'll find in most sofas. Underneath each seat is its own set of coils, which means each seat is independently supported. If someone sits down on one end, the person on the other end doesn't get pulled toward the middle. The factory has operated in Berne, Indiana since 1926.
Fabric and Leather Testing
Before any fabric or leather makes it onto a Smith Brothers piece, it gets tested. Fabrics go through rubbing and slippage tests on specialized machines, which is a fancy way of saying they check whether the fabric will pill, stretch, or wear thin where you sit. Leathers are evaluated for consistency and finish. You choose from over 1,000 fabrics and 100+ leathers, including aniline and semi-aniline top-grain options.
Modular and Custom Configuration Options
Many Smith Brothers frames let you choose arm style, leg style, back style, and configuration before you even get to fabric. That means if you need a sofa in a specific length or a sectional that fits an awkward room, you're not limited to what's on the floor. Some frames are more customizable than others, so it helps to come in and compare. Our team can walk you through what each series offers.
Is Smith Brothers Worth the Extra Money?
It can be, but not for everybody. If you're furnishing a temporary space, need something immediately, or expect to replace your furniture in a few years, paying more for custom upholstery and heavier construction may not make sense.
Smith Brothers becomes much easier to justify when you're buying for a room you plan to keep, you're particular about comfort or upholstery, and you'd rather buy something once than replace a cheaper piece several years down the road.
That's really the decision. You're not just paying for a nicer fabric or a name on the label. You're paying for customization, construction, and the expectation that you'll live with the piece for a long time.

Smith Brothers is not an Amish furniture company. The factory is located in Berne, Indiana, an area with a significant Amish population, and some Amish craftspeople do work there.
